Emergency Medical Science - Clinical
Clinical for EMS students is tailored to the program and level of learning the student is participating in. Students participate in clinical experiences provided by partnering medical care agencies to have access to skills, perform patient assessments, and obtain higher insight for various types of patients' medical conditions.
EMT-Intermediate includes 96 hours of clinical, divided into 48 hours of field internship and 48 hours of hospital clinical.
EMT-Paramedic includes 500 hours of clinical, divided into 300 hours of field internship and 200 hours of facility based clinical (such as hospital, physician offices and critical care transports).
Although EMT-Basic does not participate in clinical, they are assisted in contacting local EMS agencies to sign up for independent observer ride-a-longs.
Requirements for entry to clinical include:
- Criminal background check, which may be obtained through Health Science Admissions;
- Vaccination records;
- N95 Respirator fit-testing, performed in-house, or testing verification form from the student’s fire/EMS provider;
- Clinical orientation with the EMS department clinical coordinator;
- Wake Tech EMS uniform purchase. The uniform consists of two pairs of pants, two Wake Tech EMS department student shirts, black shoes/boots, black belt, stethoscope, and watch that can tell seconds.
